Though he can't quite pinpoint when, probably sometime between watching Perry Mason reruns and reading about famous figures in history who happened to be lawyers, Attorney Derek Allen caught the law bug.
Always passionate solving problems and arguing his point, he figured out pretty quickly that being a lawyer was what he was born to do.
Derek loves the job and he goes to great lengths to help people. One time that meant coming back to his office covered in claw marks from trying to help a client get her cats.
He's bled for the job. Literally.
While he doesn't offer cat-wrangling services anymore, his dedication to supporting the people in his care is unchanged.
Derek's professional goal is simple: make the confusing, stressful, and often emotional process of family law as simple and painless as possible. When you work with him you're guaranteed to know what's happening next and how you're going to get there.
Family law cases can be tough, and he's there to walk you through the process. Without the constant worry of what's coming next, you're free to get back to the important aspects of your life again.
People who work with Derek know exactly what to expect from the legal system. When things get difficult, he knows it's his job to be his clients' legal counselor, not their cheerleader, because he believes giving his clients realistic expectations is the best way for them to make informed decisions.
As a matter of principle, he tries to respond to his client's calls or e-mails promptly. Clients are already dealing with one of the most stressful times of their lives and they shouldn't have to worry for days or weeks on end about when they'll hear from their attorney.
Derek got his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School, one of the top law schools in the country. While there, he worked to help pass a food cart ordinance in the city, allowing many low-income residents to start their own businesses.
After graduating law school in 2011, he started his law career in commercial and business litigation in Minneapolis. While in Minnesota, he received the North Star Lawyer award for his pro bono work two years running, primarily helping foster children through the adoption process.
Once he moved back home to Wisconsin, he shifted gears to family law and has never looked back.
Derek is a passionate member of the community and a lover of everything Wisconsin, using his free time to coach the Albany High School boys' basketball team, enjoy a good beer, and watch the Badgers and Packers.
